Jacob enlisted in the 58th Ohio Infantry on 22 March 1865 and was discharged on 16 September 1865 when the unit was disbanded in Vickburg. He was a private at age 41, 6'1" tall, grey eyes. Occupation listed before enlistment was butcher. He received a "Squirrel Hunter's Discharge". Papers say he was born in Washington Co., MD.
Applications for pension and widow's pension indicate he as a bricklayer. Catherine apparently couldn't write as "her mark" or an "X" were often recorded.
