Davenport " , 14, b: ME
It is unclear what happened to James and Davenport's parents. It is possible they died between 1850-1860 and they are living with relatives in the 1860 census. Since they both appear in area of Reno, NV and Nevada County, CA, one suspects that they probably travelled together to California.
It is also unclear the spelling of the original surname. It is likely that James and Davenport adopted the spelling of "Machomich" for convenience, etc.
The marriage of James Henry Machomich to Mary Alice Mumma is recorded in a marriage certificate in the possession of his great grand daughter, Rosemary Sater. The wording is: "James Henry Machomich of Eastport Maine and Mary Allice Mumma of Mt. Carroll, Illinois on July 2, 1872 at Sierria(sic) Valley, Plumas Co., Cal. by John Whitcroft, J.P. at D.T. Machomich Ranch at 20 minits(sic) of one O clock. Witness: George H. Cunningham, Witness: Edna Soltew(? sp)"
The witness, George Cunningham, is found in the 1870 census of Placer County, Post Office of Summit. he is a tanner, age 35 and was born in Maine. The 1880 census lists a George Cunningham, age 39, living in Beckwourth, Plumas county. He has a 6 year old son, Albert, born in California, living with him. He is a farmer, also born in Maine. I would certainly expect this George Cunningham was the witness on the certificate.
