Demanda married William C. Johnson on November 11, 1860 in Fountain county, IN (Marriage Record Book 4, page 549).
William was the son of Samuel B. and Sarah Johnson. William was born in Warren county, Ohio (per Military Record). The Johnson family were living in Fountain county at the time of the 1850 Census but had moved to Benton county, IN by the 1860 Census.
Pension and military records indicate William enlisted in the Union Army on August 7, 1862 for a period of 3 years in the 20th Regiment of Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was sent to the front rather quickly and was captured at Fredericksburg on Dec 16, 1862 but paroled on Jan 12, 1863. He was returned to duty and severely wounded at Gettysburg on Jul 2, 1863. The record is incomplete but after hospitalization it indicates he was returned to duty, wounded a second time and again hospitalized. He was granted leave from the hospital on Nov 1, 1864 with permission to travel to Remington Station in Jasper county, IN which was near to his father's home. He fell ill and died at his father's home in Gilboa township, Benton county, IN on May 13, 1865.
He was buried at Mt. Gilboa Cemetery in Benton county. The marker indicates he was born in 1837 and confirms the death date of May 13, 1865.
His wife Demanda applied for a pension in June 1865 but the pension file indicates she died on July 16, 1866. Their two children were eventually awarded pensions until age 16.
Their children were: Mary Alice, b: Feb 15, 1862 and William Alvah, b: October 13, 1864. The dates attested by William Abernethy, M.D. (per Pension Record). Interestingly, William Alvah's birth date indicates he was conceived during his father's leave from the hospital.
