Lionel "Rabbit" Moomau GREENVILLE
Ellsworth Lionel "Rabbit" Moomau, 78, widower of Venitia (Ritenour) Moomau, of Greenville, died on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at Augusta Health in Fishersville.
He was born on December 12, 1932, in Greenville, a son of Ralph Moore and Virginia (Vines) Moomau.
Mr. Moomau was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
Prior to retirement, he was employed by DuPont. He was a member of the Greenville United Methodist Church, Lee Lodge #209 and Augusta #111 Masonic Lodges, Steeles Tavern Veterans of Foreign Wars, Staunton American Legion, a charter member of the Greenville Athletic Club, and he served on the Augusta County Electorial Board as secretary for 18 years. He coached Babe Ruth baseball for 38 years.
In addition to his wife, who died September 16, 1996, he was also preceded in death by a son, Shawn Bear Moomau on February 28, 2003; three brothers, Quinnlyn F. Moomau, Alvin Randall Moomau, and Rothwell Moore Moomau; and two sisters, Lorraine Miller and Nedra Zuane Moomau.
Family members include a son, Rothwell Lionel "Rocky" Moomau, of Greenville; a brother, Ralph M. Moomau Jr.; four sisters, Elaine M. Shifflett, Zelda Germaine "Dolly" Hite, Ilva Ukraine "Crannie" Campbell, and Shannon Marie Moomau Conley; two grandchildren, Candace Renee Moomau-Borkey and Brandi Nicole Moomau; and three great-grandsons, Isaac, Joseph, and Deegan.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at Greenville United Methodist Church by the Reverend Kevin Haynes and the Reverend Steve Lewis. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Curtis Riley, Dennis Porter, Garland Brooks, Ken Cason, Jake Dunsmore, Carl Sheets, and Ron Shifflett.
Honorary pallbearers will be Brandy Lilly, Connie Massie, Martha Fretwell, Betty Poe, Amanda DiMeo, Theresa Janosky, Betty Davis, Helen Reese, Joan Dudley, Leslie Piner, Callie Graves, Roxie Dudley, Gwin Berry, Mac Lawhorne, Larry Taylor, Ricky Shifflett, Joey Reid, Jay Carpenter, Larry, Boyette, Christy Boyette, Carol Hulse, Brian Ennedy, Jerry Shatz, Andy Crane, members of the Greenville Athletic Club, and all former Babe Ruth players.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. Monday, January 24, 2011, at Henry Funeral Home.
