Time Line for LEONARD MUMMA , 1742 1817
Son of Leonard Mumma the immigrant
[Note: Much of his data was extracted from a document found in the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society library - MUMMA family files. It was probably written in the early 1960s by Ira Landis who had done research on the early generations of the Mumma family. Additional notes and information were added by Doug Mumma in 2002]
1742 March 10 Leonard Mumma born in Earl Township, Lancaster Co.
1763 He came of age and seems to be listed on the Earl township assessments list. All other assessment lists for Earl Township 1760-1768 are missing
1767 Leonard of Earl Township becomes guardian of his nephew, John Mumma, son of John Christian Mumma deceased, a minor over 14 years old..
1769 Leonard Mumma, Earl Township, 100 acres, 2 horses, 1 cattle, 2 sheep, is probably Leonard the younger son because the father, named Leonard, was very old an died the following year (1770)
1770, 1771, 1772, 1773 Leonard appears on the Earl Township assessments with 100 acres. In 1773 the name John Mumma (his ward and nephew) appear on the assessment. At that time, Leonard probably sold the Earl farm to John, although no deeds concerning the property were recorded. John is there in 1773-1785 and Leonard disappears from Earl Twp. during those years, although he came back later.
1771 Leonard Mumma appears on the Berks County Prothonotary "Appearance Docket" in February and March.
1773 March 9 Leonard Mumma bought 155 acres in Brecknock Township for ?600. The deed says "Leonard Mumma of Earl Township". Lancaster Deed BK p:632 RR:9
1779 - 1782 These are the only dated Brecknock assessments existing before 1799. In 1779, Leonard is assessed there for 100 acres and in 1782 for 140 acres. There are several undated Brecknock assessments between 1773-1799 on which he appears with 140 acres, 2 horses, 4 cows.
1789 February Leonard Mumma sells John Stock 150 acres in Earl and Brecknock, payments to be made to his heirs in installments after his decease. Lancaster Deed Bk HH:202.
1793 September 4 Leonard Mumma sells John Stock 112 acres of the Brecknock tract which he had bought in 1773 to be paid by 23 bonds. Lancaster Deed Bk OO:370
1796 Leonard Mumma reappears on the Earl Township assessment and remains there through 1810.
1798 April 2 Leonard Mumma of Earl Twp. buys 150 acres in Earl Township for ?1,650. Lancaster Deed Bk G3:1
1810 Nov. 12 Leonard Mumma makes his Will. He refers to 12 children, but mentions only 2 by name: Henry and Elizabeth, presumably the youngest.
1817 Nov. 27 Leonard Mumma's Will is probated. Lancaster Will Bk M:51

[later, the writer wrote] Since writing the preceding page, I have found a paper at the Lancaster County Court house which is headed "1830 supplemental Account Leonard Mumma deceased." Leonard's Will had provided for payments to his 12 children beginning with the oldest and on down until all had been paid. According to the account, each of the 12 received ?25 or about $66.66. The payments were as follows:
Year To whom payment paid
------- -------------------------------------------------------
1818 Jacob Mumma
1818 Henry Muma for John Stock (this indicates that a daughter had married a Stock. Is this Margaret, wife of John Stock to whom Leonard sold a farm in 1789?
1818 Henry Frey for David Muma (brother-in-law of David who has migrated to Virginia)
1819 Philip Lough who intermarried with Catharine Mumma
1819 Elizabeth Muma by attorney (suggests she was not married and possibly out of the area)
1819 Peter Muma by attorney (suggests he was not living nearby)
1819 Henry Beck & Julian his wife
1821 T. Baertel intermarried with Christina
1822 Henry Muma
1823 John Muma by attorney (living in Luzerne Co.)
1824 Leonard Muma by attorney (suggests he was not living nearby)
1828 Mary Beck (Suggests that Mary had married, but the husband was deceased)
Thus, the birth order of the living children is clearly established since his will stated that payments should begin with the eldest child and continued until the youngest was paid. Additional documents were filed in 1835 for John by his attorney (his lawyer brother-in-law) to recover his payment. Apparently, the executors had died and his payment was never made. Similar documents were filed by his siblings, but have not been viewed.
