The Hagerstown Mail, Friday, July 22, 1910:
CHILD IS DROWNED
While Mrs. Daniel Mumma, of Williamsport, was searching for Nellie, her 2-year-old child, her lifeless body was floating in the C. & O. Canal. The child was accidentally drowned about 3 o'clock Monday afternoon by falling into the canal just above the lock and her body was swept through the flume into the level below. Ten minutes later William Lewis a canal man, saw the child's body floating on the water. She was pulled out. Dr. Richardson was summoned. Efforts were made to resuscitate the child, but failed. The child had wandered away from home and gone to the lock, where some men warned her not to venture too near the water. She had started for home and stopped to play along the bank when she fell in. Justice Hershberger viewed the body and decided that an inquest was not necessary. The child is survived by her parents and a sister, Anna and a baby brother.
Mr. Mumma is employed in McKeesport, Pa.
