Indexes of the 1850 census indicate that George's middle initial is N. Although the original was inspected and the text is not clear whether it is a W or a N, it is clear that George W is his correct name. note by PMumma
In 1860 he is living with his father, Jacob, without a wife.
In 1870 census he is living with wife Sarah and has the following children living with him:
Eliza A. 10 FW See note below.*
George B 8 MW
Henry M. 6 MW
John J. 3 MW
Jennie 1 FW See note below.**
*I believe Eliza A. is Elias. Elias is listed in Sarah's obituary as a deceased child. The obit clearly states that she had only one daughter which we know to be Sarah. His mother's obituary notes him as having died before her. "The two oldest boys --Mack and Elias and their only daughter are dead." As the two oldest they would be born before Henry in 1864. Eliza is either Elias or she is not their daughter. I do not know how the census taker marked female if this was Elias except if he assumed by the sound of the name it was Eliza and thus was female. The other option is that Elias was born and died between the censuses so he would not show-up in a census. His brother George does not list him as a living sibling so one can assume he died before George.
His sister Sarah does not have an obituary that lists family members thus not sure if he died before or after her. Later censuses do not list this boy living with his immediate family. Note from P Mumma March 2002, mumma6@yahoo.com
Mystery solved. In Pension Records reviewed at the Nationial Archives, Washington, DC, June 2002 it is noted that George's son Elias Allan Mumma was born 1 Jan 1861. Pension records reviewed by PMumma.
**It is purely speculation on my part but Jennie probably is James, they might have called him Jamie when he was young and the census taker simply misheard the name. Again the girl rather than a boy could be purely due to census takers assumption that "Jamie" was a female name. It's anybody's best guess. In no other census is Jennie listed in George's home and Sarah's obit notes that they only had one daughter which we know to be Sarah. Note from PMumma March 2002, mumma6@yahoo.com
Ten years later, in 1880, George is living with wife Sarah and children
Harry M. 15,
John J. 13,
James M. 11,
William R. 9,
Sarah M. 6
The census indicates that all children listed are his sons and daughter.
He belonged to the IOOF, Harrisonville Lodge No. 710, May 17, 1870

On Pension Records found at the National Archives George W. Mumma's (Muma) birth date is listed as March 16, 1832. This web site had his birthday as March 12, 1832 up until this pension record was pulled in June 2002 by Pamela Mumma. The pension record also reveals all living children as of July 4 1898 with their middle names and birthdates as well as his wife's full maiden name and marriage date. Paper work of 1915 reveals all eight of his children. Two children, Elias and Sadie, have already died. The documentation reveals that he signed his mark with an "X" rather than with a signature. It notes that he is 5 ft 6 in, 126 lbs, complexion dark, color of eyes grey, color of hair dark, and that he was a farmer.
His military service was in Company C, 82nd Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was drafted and enrolled 14 November 1864 as a Private and was honorably discharged on 13 July 1965 at Halls Hill, Virginia.

George W. Mumma
Veteran George W. Mumma died Monday, July 22 1918 at his residence, which is also the residence of his son Charles A. and family, on the old Mumma farm on the road between Harrisonville and Laidig, at the advanced age of 86 years, 4 months and 6 days. After having risen from his bed on the morning of the day of his death, he complained of feeling tired, and said he believed he would go back to bed for a while. About 11 o'clock, a member of the family called him, and getting no reply, went to his bed and found that he had slept peacefully away. His death was the result of chronic, pulmonary trouble, from which he had suffered for several years.
The deceased was a son of Jacob and Sarah Mumma who removed to Licking Creek township from Franklin County more than eighty years ago, and settled on the farm which for three generations has been known as the "old Mumma place." George was one of a family of eleven children, only two of whom now survive, namely David R. P. Mumma, of Sixmile Run, Pa, and Mrs. Anna Hann, near Saluvia.
The deceased was married to Sarah Brechbill, who died about six years ago. To this union were born eight children, five of whom are living, namely, John J., of Laidig; Harry M., of Pleasant Ridge; James M. and William R., of Curwensville, Pa and Charles A. on the old home place. There are also 16 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Mumma saw service in the Civil War, he being a member of Company C., 82nd regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry.
The deceased was a quiet, obliging, industrious citizen - a good kind father and husband, and a friend to the church he espoused. The funeral was held on the Wednesday following, the services being conducted by Rev. John M. Diehl, of the Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev. E. J. Croft, of the M. E. Church, and Rev. Henry Wolf, of the U. B. Church. Interment was made in the cemetery at the Greenhill Presbyterian church.
