1870 census
George W. is living with wife Sarah and has the following children living with him:
Eliza A. 10 FW See note below.* <============
George B 8 MW
Henry M. 6 MW
John J. 3 MW
Jennie 1 FW
Info from Pamela Mumma - *I believe after much research that Eliza A. is Elias. Elias is listed in Sarah's obit as a deceased child; the obit clearly says they only have one daughter which we know to be Sarah. Eliza is either Elias or she is not their daughter. I do not know how the census taker showed a girl if this was Elias except if he assumed by the sound of the name it was Eliza and was female. If Elias was born and died between the censuses then he would never show in a census. His Mother's obituary notes him as having died before her. "The two oldest boys --Mack and Elias and their only daughter are dead." As the two oldest they would be born before Henry in 1864.
His brother George does not list him as a living sibling so one can assume he died first.
His sister Sarah does not have an obituary that lists family members thus not sure if he died before or after her. I cannot find this boy in later censuses. Note from P Mumma march 2002, mumma6@yahoo.com
I pulled George W. Mumma's pension records from the National Archives, Washington, DC. George, his father, lists Elias' birth date as 1 January 1861 in his pension records. Elias was listed as the first born. Pamela Mumma, June 2002
In the 1880 census, he is living as a border in the home of Andrew Brant.

*********************** Note by Doug Mumma *****************
In the actual census records, Elias was one of 5 people [including his cousin] who were entered on the last page of the census for Taylor township. Somehow he was initially left off and later added. This is on page 28 of the original census.
From Elias' tombstone record found at

Mumma, Elias A., died Aug 5, 1892, Aged 32 yrs 7 ms 4 d, "My husband dear has gone to rest, God took him home, He thought it best".
From this record, his birth is calculated as 1 Jan 1860, which would mean he was born before his parents marriage. Either way it appears that Sarah was pregnant with Elias prior to the marriage. I believe the 1880 census provides the most correct birth year since he would have already been 20 years old in that census.
